ANNOUNCING: We Sit in Circle 3–30th July 2026
The James Northfield Heritage Trust is very proud to be supporting the second iteration of We Sit in Circle – an exhibition about women’s strength, hope, and survival. The second iteration of a series presented by The Torch in partnership with Queen Victoria Women’s Centre (QVWC), We Sit in Circle showcases powerful paintings and intricate weavings by First Peoples women with lived experience of incarceration. They are mothers, aunties, grandmothers, daughters, and sisters.
Curated to reflect the circle and a resting place, We Sit in Circle positions works by artists in the community near the entrance and exits of the gallery space, while those positioned in the centre are by artists currently in prison. This design reflects the position of each artists’ journey – with those in the centre regrouping, reconnecting and resting until they in time, join the community and continue on their own paths after release.

First Look: Introducing our Resort 2022 Ready-To-Wear Collection, The Postcard. “For this Resort season I wanted to create a collection that had a real sense of joy and escape. Looks that embodied all those great feelings and memories of a wonderful holiday - the anticipation, excitement, fun and laughter. We were given the opportunity to work with some of the beautiful art of James Northfield who created some of the most iconic Australian travel posters of the 30, 40’s and 50’s. I love the use of colour and the romantic nostalgia of the imagery. We’ve tried to create a collection that is light and playful. Thoughts of holidays and good times to look forward to, were front of mind - I can’t wait!” - Creative Director, Nicky Zimmermann
Zimmermann would like to thank James Northfield trust for permission to utilise a selection of James Northfield’s artworks as prints within the Resort 22 RTW Collection.News/Media
2022: Zimmermann Resort Collection 2022 “It was inspired by the iconographic works of Australian artist, James Northfield.”
“For its newest resort release, Zimmermann zeroed in on the collective works of Australian graphic artist, James Northfield, for inspiration. Active from the 1910s through to the 1960s, Northfield was responsible for some of our country’s most recognisable travel posters, and by extension, the strong sense of nostalgia we feel for its unique geographical scapes and the emotions and experiences they lend to, through the artist’s iconography. ”
